Beginning with closed fifth position, the book continues with extensions and the various finger groupings that are played in fifth position. The exercises and pieces focus on both shifting and playing across strings in fifth position. Teachers can assign Fifth Position for the Cello to their intermediate students along with The Shifting Book for Cello, Part One, and Finger Exercises for the Cello, Book Three, both of which have study material in fifth position.

Cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, are among the most beautiful and virtuous written for this instrument. This Suite n. 1 in G major is one of the simplest and most played by cello players. Especially the famous Prelude is very also played with the guitar, both in G major, that is like the original, and in D major, which I think better exploit the expressive potential of the instrument, even if it is a little more difficult for the positions used. A beautiful arrangement for guitar of this suite is the one made by John Duarte.

If you like Bach’s music, I can also recommend my personal version of the “Air on the G String” with special Pythagorean tuning. Good Listening.
